Grade VIII YMBA Senior I

Class Information

The three-term academic year of the Dhamma School commences in mid-September and runs until mid-July. Nearer the time of commencement, we will update you with current information about this class further.

Students will continue to learn:

Dhamma

  • Key events in the life of the Buddha from the enlightenment to his passing away (parinibbāna). Kamma and vipāka, proof of rebirth, and the five natural laws (pañca niyāma dhammā).
  • Five hindrances (pañca nīvaraṇa) and the ten Fetters (dasa sañyojana).
  • General knowledge of the forty objects of meditation in samatha bhāvanā and the results.
  • Buddhist social ethics based on the discourses (suttas) of Parābava, Sigālovāda and Vyaggapajja.
  • Students should memorise verses 19, 24, 35, 54, 56, 62–63, 76, 80, 94, 99, 100, 104–105, 129 of the Dhammapada and understand each verse’s meaning.

Abhidhamma

Syllabuses of Junior Levels:

  • And an analysis of the twenty-eight kinds of qualities of matter (rūpa samuddesa). Their classification into eight categories (rūpa vibhāgo), etc. Formation of matter (rūpa samuṭṭhāna). Grouping (rūpa kalāpa). Occurrence of matter, in different planes, times and classes of beings (rūpa pavattikkamo). (See Textbook chapter 6).
  • Classification of citta according to (i) feelings (vedanā), (ii) roots (hetu), and (iii) functions (kicca).
