Class Information

The three-term academic year of the Dhamma School commences in mid-September and runs until mid-July. Nearer the time of commencement, we will update you with current information about this class further.

Students will continue to learn:

Dhamma

The syllabus of Junior I, and the following:

  • The Buddha’s six kinds of special knowledge (ṣaḍ asādhāraṇa ñāna) and the tathāgata’s ten powers (dasa tathāgata bala)
  • The names of books of the Vinaya Piṭaka, the main divisions, and their commentaries
  • Key events in Prince Siddhārtha’s life from birth up to the end of the first twenty years after enlightenment, with particular reference to the following:
    • The First Sermon
    • Ordination of Yasa and his Friends
    • Commencement of dhammadūta (missionary) activities
    • The Chief Disciples
    • Establishment of the Bhikkhuṇī Order
    • The Buddha’s visits to Sri Lanka
  • The Buddha’s lay Patrons – Anāthapiṇḍika, Bimbisāra, Visākhā, Kosala, etc.
  • Lives of Venerable Ānanda, Sāriputta, Moggallāna, and Mahā Kassapa
  • Bhikkhuṇīs Khemā, Uppalavaṇṇā
  • Six Theravāda Buddhist Councils and first writing down of the Tripiṭaka
  • The Four Noble Truths, with details of the Noble Eightfold Path
  • Four sublime states—Brahma Vihāra
  • The Ten Perfections (dasa pāramitā) with a Jātaka story to illustrate each pāramitā
  • The Dhammapada. Students should memorise the Dhammapada verses 12, 33, 41, 43, 50, 53, 60–61, 82, 85, 109 and understand each verse’s meaning.

Abhidhamma

The syllabus of Junior I, and the following:

  • A clear understanding of the fifty-two mental factors: cetasika and their classifications.
  • The composition of each citta, sangahanaya and the identification of cittas in which a particular cetasikas manifest—Sampayoganaya Nibbāna, the definition, qualities, aspects, etc.
