Class Information

The three-term academic year of the Dhamma School commences in mid-September and runs until mid-July. Nearer the time of commencement, we will update you with current information about this class further.

Students will continue to learn:

Dhamma

  • Important events in the life of the Buddha from Prince Siddhārtha’s birth to enlightenment (bodhi)
  • The twenty-four great qualities of the Buddha, Dhamma, and Saṅgha
  • The history, reasons for, and results of the three Theravāda Buddhist Councils (saṅgāyanā)
  • Introduction to the Tripiṭaka. Learning the names of the Sutta Piṭaka books, their main divisions and names of commentaries
  • Different types of dāna and sīla, ten wholesome (dasa kusala) and unwholesome deeds (akusala kamma). Ten meritorious deeds (dasa puṇyakkriyā)
  • Memorising the Mahā Maṅgala Sutta and the Karaṇīya Metta Sutta with an understanding of each verse’s meaning
  • An introduction to the Dhammapada. Students should memorise the Dhammapada stanzas 1–5, 13–14, 16, 21 and 37 and should understand each verse’s meaning

Abhidhamma

  • History of Abhidhamma
  • Names of Books of the Abhidhamma Piṭaka and their Commentaries
  • Differences of the contents of Sutta and Abhidhamma Piṭaka
  • Difference between Paramattha Sacca (Absolute Reality) and Sammuti Sacca (Conventional Reality)
  • The Four Absolute Realities (paramatthas). Classification of citta into 89 or 121 types
