SUMMARY:Äsala Full Moon (Pōya) Day
DESCRIPTION:On the month of Äsala\, the annual procession at the Tooth Relic Temple\, Kandy\, takes place. Religiously the Äsala full moon is important because the historical Buddha had delivered “The Turning the Wheel of Teaching”\, his inaugural instructions in the Deer Park in Sarnath\, India. It was a simple introduction to the Buddhist philosophical analysis of the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path.

SUMMARY:Making Invitation for the Rain Retreat & the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta Chanting
DESCRIPTION:The Buddha’s deliverance of the first sermon—the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta—is known as the Dhamma Day. Gotama Buddha gave the Discourse on the Turning of the Wheel of the Dhamma on the full moon of Äsala (July) in the Deer Park\, Sarnath\, India. \nOn the full moon day\, higher ordained Buddhist monks commence observing the ‘Rain Retreat’ (vassāna) for three months by committing themselves to remain in one place. They use the three months to teach the Dhamma to their lay devotees and strive to deepen their understanding of the Dhamma and its practice by developing wisdom and compassion. It is a widespread tradition that Buddhist devotees make a formal invitation to the members of the saṅgha (monastic community) by requesting them and pledging to provide the Four Requisites throughout this period of spiritual and religious observance.

SUMMARY:Kingsbury Bak Maha Uḷela: Sinhala & Tamil New Year
DESCRIPTION:In April\, Sri Lanka Educational\, Cultural & Welfare Foundation organises the Kingsbury Bak Maha Uḷela. The Sinhala and Tamil New year\, one of the most significant annual\, non-religious events enjoyed by both the Sinhala and Tamil-speaking Sri Lankans\, falls on the 13th and the 14th of April. The exact timing of when the New Year begins changes each year. Traditional astrology dictates the proper time for activities\, such as starting work. The auspicious moment depends on the time that the sun crosses over from one planetary sign to another. There is much joy and anticipation of good fortune that a new year will bring\, both young and old alike. The new year is celebrated over a week or so\, generally with goodwill towards everyone and sharing sweetmeats and other traditional foods
